Your BFF has just announced she’s having a baby! Of course you want to host a baby shower to celebrate…but how do you do that? On my blog, Spaceships and Laser Beams, we specialize in parties for boys (and non-frilly girls) so I have lots of party suggestions. Here’s a brief list to get your planning started.

There are five main areas to think about when you’re hosting a baby shower: invitations; decorations; menu; activities; and party favors.

Baby Shower Invitations

Today, a lot of invites are casually extended via the phone or e-mail, but whenever possible, I think invitations via postal delivery are still the best; it’s fun to receive REAL mail, especially when it arrives in a pretty envelope! Anticipation for the party gets a jump-start!

Pick Your Baby Shower Decorations

Decorations make a huge difference at a baby shower. They don’t have to be elaborate or expensive to be successful, but having a theme gives your party consistency and focus. There are lots of ways to decide on a theme, including find inspiration by: considering the interests of new mama-to-be; think of what ambiance you want to create; or decide if the party focus is on new mama and her preferences or new baby and childhood joys.

Baby Shower Food Ideas

Very often your theme choice can help you decide what you want on your menu. Try to tie the two together. For example, if your theme is “You Are My Sunshine”, one menu item might be a yellow, lemon parfait dessert. Everything on the table wouldn’t have to be yellow of course, but the sunshine theme would lend itself to lighter fare like a wild berry salad instead of a meatball sub!

Of course, the more complex you make the menu, the more time and money it will take. A brunch, afternoon tea or an evening dessert bar will not require as much prep as an entire meal. Finger foods and easy to eat choices are popular at showers.

Baby Shower Games

There are lots of baby shower games to choose from! Whether or not you opt to play games, it’s a good idea to plan some activity. Crafting has become a popular way to get guests interacting. Decorating onesies, bibs, or wood blocks, for example, provides time for girl-talk and extra gifts for baby-to-be.

Baby Shower Favor Ideas

Almost all party guests are sent home with favors these days. It’s a nice way for the hostess to say “thanks for coming” and it doesn’t have to be a big ticket item. Bath bombs, nail polish or a specially wrapped taste-treat are examples of some current favorites.

Supporting a friend by hosting a baby shower takes preparation, but it can be a lot of fun. It’s an occasion that is likely to be remembered always, so consider these suggestions to help you plan a terrific celebration!
